Prepositions

 

A preposition is a word used to link nounspronouns, or phrases to other words within a sentence.

Let’s under preposition one by one

 

1.             Between (दो के बीच में )

जब कोई चीज़ दो लोगों,दो पार्टियों आदि में बांटनी हो

Example –

1.               The property was divided between Monu and Ramu.

2.               There was a big river between the two cities. 

3.               Max was standing between you and me.     

4.               There is no quarrel between Rita and me.         

 

 

2.               Among –( दो से अधिक के बीच में )        

जब कोई चीज़ दो से अधिक लोगों, पार्टियों आदि में बांटनी हो

Example –

1.   The property was divided among the three brothers.

2.   The money was divided among all the students.

3.   The magician threw the toffees among the children.

4.   There was no one among them to help me.

3.              Over ( के ऊपर)

a)  जब एक चीज़ दूसरी के ऊपर distance/gap में हो

1.   The plane is flying over the city.

2.   He pulled her veil over her face.

3.   The fan is hanging over our head.

4.   The bridge is made over the river.

 

b) जब किसी चीज़ के पुरे पार्ट/area/ body को ढकना या cover करना हो

1.   I spread a white cloth over the table.

2.   He pulled shawl over his body.

3.   The sheet was spread all over the floor.

4.   She white sheet of ice was spread over the land.

 

c)  Some other meanings –

1) Overnight – रातभर

2) Think over – विचार करना

3) Over there – वहाँ पर ( जब किसी दूर रखी चीज़ की और इशारा किया जाये और उसे लाने के लिए चल के जाना पड़े

4) Turnover  - कुल बिक्री

5) Overtake – साथ होकर आगे निकलना

6) Over  - time limit/period समाप्त होना

7) Over – अधिक use as a prefix.

Examples –

1.  We stayed there overnight.

2.   I don’t want overnight stay there.

3.   We must think over the problem.

4.   All the books are lying over there.

5.   She is standing over there.

6.   What is the annual turnover of your firm?

7.   Be careful while you overtake some other vehicle.

8.   The date to pay the bill is over.

9.   The admission date is over.

10.                    Don’t be overweight.

11.                     Over eating is bad for health.

 

 

4   Above – (से ऊपर)

    जब एक चीज़ दूसरी से रैंक के हिसाब से ऊपर हो

1.   The water level in the river is above danger mark.

2.   She has got marks above 95% in final exam.

3.   Only Rita is above me in the office.

4.   The clock wall is hanging above the calendar.

 

 

 

 

5       Below - (से नीचे )

    जब एक चीज़ दूसरी से रैंक के हिसाब से नीचे  हो

1.   The water is below the danger mark in the river.

2.   He always gets below 70 % in final exam.

3.   They all are below me in the office.

4.   The painting is hanging below the wall clock.

5.   The temperature has gone below 20 degree today.

 

 

 

 

 

 

6. On – Following are the use of ‘On’ as Preposition

 

a)  On – (पर) के meaning में जब एक चीज़ दूसरी के surface पे रखी हो

1.   All the books are lying on the table.

2.   He has sack on his head.

3.   She was standing on the roof of her house.

4.   A hundred rupees note was lying on the road.

5.   Beautiful scenery is hanging on the wall.

 

 

b) On – days & dates के पहले

1.   We shall visit Delhi on Sunday.

2.   I was born on Monday.

3.   The result will be declared on 20th July.

4.   She called me on 10th of this month.

 

c)  On – with planets & lands

 

1.   There is no water on the moon.

2.   No man lives on the mars.

3.   There is everything available on the earth.

4.   I am very happy to be on my land again.

5.   No crop grows on this land because it’s barren.

 

d) On time – समय पर यानि बिलकुल समय पर या एन time पे

 

1.    We reached the office on time.

2.   The peon rang the bell on time.

3.   We are lucky that we were able to finish the work on time.

4.   I think I shall hardly be able to call you on time.

 

e)  On  - to show responsibility & dependence

 

1.   He has burden of his family on his shoulders.

2.   He has many responsibilities on her head.

3.   Reet can stand on her own feet.

4.   Never depend on others.

5.   Take it on yourself.

 

f)   On + v1 + ing –  Following meanings

On coming late –  लेट आने पर

On telling lie – झूट बोलने पर

On making noise – शोर करने पर

 

1.   He was fined on coming late.

2.   You will be punished on telling lie.

3.   On telling lie, he was expelled from the office.

 

g)    On – Some other uses with verbs

Keep on -  करते रहो/ जारी रखो

Carry on – लगे रहो                    to keep the action

Switch on – कोई device को चलाना             continue

Turn on – घुमा के चलाना

Move on – आगे चलो / आगे बढ़ो

Go on – करते रहना

 

1.   We kept on working till evening.

2.   You should carry on your work.

3.   Switch on the fan.

4.   Please turn on the water tab.

5.   They went on working till midnight.

7       Under – Following are the uses of Under

 

a)  Under ( के नीचे ) जब एक चीज़ दूसरी के नीचे हो

1.   They are waiting you under that tree.

2.   My shoes are lying under the bed.

3.   Is the dog under the table?

   

b) Under – to show control ( नियंत्रण के show करने के लिए )

1.   This area is under my observation.

2.   All these people work under my instructions.

3.   Nothing is under my control in this office.

 

c)  Under – to show any work in process.

 

1.   The road is under construction.

2.   The bridge is under construction these.

3.   We cannot work under any pressure

4.   Your application is under process.

 

d) Underneath – when thing is covered by another. जब एक चीज दूसरी के नीचे ढकी हो या दबी हो

1.   The file is underneath the mattress.

2.   A dog buried underneath the debris of this house.

3.   There is nothing underneath this bag.

4.   There is a cockroach underneath this brick.

 

e)  Underestimate – किसी को कम आंकना

1.   We should never underestimate others.

2.   Don’t underestimate his talent.

 

 

At – Following are the uses of ‘at’ as preposition

 

a)  At ( पर ) to indicate place or location

 

1.   We shall meet at the bus stand.

2.   I saw him standing at the bus adda.

3.   Let’s meet at school in the evening.

4.   We can see him at the construction site.

5.   The ball was lying at the boundary line.

 

b) At – to tell time or about time

 

1.   Our school begins at 9 am.

2.   We reached there at 5 in the evening.

3.   I was waiting you at that time.

4.   At this time we are in meeting.

 

c)  At – with the names of villages and small cities

 

1.   My father is living at Karnal these days.

2.   You are working at Hisar

3.   Do you live at Malikpur?

4.   These days I am staying at Mirzapur.

 

d) AT – to tell about the speed of a vehicle and sale rate of a product

 

1.   He always drives car at the speed of 80 km/h.

2.   Bullet train runs at the speed of 400 km/h.

3.   Don’t drive at high speed.

4.   Milk is sold at Rs. 50 a litre.

5.   Grapes are sold at Rs. 80 a kg.

 

e)  At – with Age and places of study

 

1.   He got married at the age of 40.

2.   She got a govt. at the age of 25 or at 25.

3.   My sister is studying at Tagore University.

4.   He studies at Art Collage.

5.   I am studying physics at Howard University.

f)    At – when you are good in doing something

1.   I am good at English speaking.

2.  My father is good at playing drum.

3.   Rita was good at managing things.

 

g)  At – to tell the situation of doing something

 

1.   I think he is at lunch. (means to say someone having lunch)

2.   We were at war that time.

3.   He is at seminar now.

 

h) Some other uses

 

1.   At any rate – किसी भी कीमत पर

2.   At all cost – हर कीमत पर / हर हाल में

3.   At night – रात को

4.   At noon – दोपहर को

5.   Aim at – निशाना साधना

6.   Look at – पर  देखना

7.   Laugh at – किसी पे हँसना

 

1.   We have to reach there at any rate.

2.   He had done it at all cost.

3.   He held a meeting at night.

4.   The hunter aimed at the lion.

5.   They are looking at board.

6.   We should not laugh at others.

 

9       In – following are the uses

 

a)  In – use with years & month names when time is not specific.

 

1.    I was born in 1983.

2.   We shall celebrate my birthday in July.

3.   She will return from USA in 2021.

 

b) In – when something inside other in stable position

   जब  एक चीज़ दूसरी में स्थिर पोजीशन में हो

1.   I have a pen in my pocket.

2.   He has five books in his bag.

3.   Ram is sleeping in his room.

4.   She has a cup in her hand.

 

c)  In – to indicate shape, color, size & position

 

1.   The house is built in triangular shape.

2.   The table is not made in correct size.

3.   Her bag is in red colour.

4.   He is not sitting in correct posture.

 

d) In – to indicate morning & evening

 

1.   He got up early in the morning.

2.   Don’t visit me in the morning time.

3.   Let’s hold a meeting in the evening.

4.   He met me that day in the evening at 5.

 

e)  In – to indicate location when something is inside of some boundary

 

1.   They are standing in the bus stand.

2.   I saw him in this hotel.

3.   We have placed her purse in the drawer.

4.    I found my phone lying in his shop.

5.   My friend was in the park.

 

f)    In – to indicate or express interest, belief  & opinion

 

1.   I have no interest in this movie.

2.   Do you believe in God?

3.   In my opinion, he is not a good leader.

4.   We are not in regular touch with you.

 

 

10. ABOUT 

    a)     About – के बारे में

1.    I know all about you?

2.    She has told me about him.

3.    Do you know about my family?

4.    He knows about my father very well.

5.    Everyone wants to know about her life.

6.    I think nothing about you.

 

b)      About – लगभग के meaning में use ( number /quantity)

1.    I have about 30 pens.

2.    We have bought about 100 pencils.

3.    She has spent about 2000.

4.    In my purse I have about rs. 200.

5.    We ran about two kilometer and then stopped.

C       About – होने वाला/जाने वाला/ करने वाला इत्यादि के अर्थ में

1.      He was about to leave for the office.

2.     He was about to come out of his room.

3.     He is about to start the lecture.

4.     I am about to complain against you.

5.     She is about to call us.
